Sudden Aggression in Older Dogs
There are many forms
of dog aggression. The distinguished police dog trainer Ed Frawley of Leerburg Kennels names 16 forms
in his training guides, accounting for everything from
the dogs gender, to their possessiveness, territoriality, dominance, or fear. The residential dog owner doesnt necessarily need to
be so academic,
but they should always be able to recognize aggression and deal with it appropriately. Aggression
is always one
step away from a dog bite,
which is itself one step away from a vet bill and a lawsuit.
The common
signs of aggression are growling, snarling, barking, curled lips, lunging and an overall menacing posture, where
the dog is tensed and ready to snap. (Note: there is also something known as a submissive smile
exhibited by some dogs, whereby
the animal actually shows its teeth as it approaches.
Ive seen this behavior confuse many owners, but it can be dismissed as
such by the dogs lowering its head as it smiles, and often wag its tail too). There are other indications, such as jumping or mounting, or even standing in your way that are much less of a problem and often go ignored when not accompanied by the other more severe signs.
One of the most often misunderstood forms of aggression is that which arises in older dogs all of a sudden, especially when those dogs have been docile, even submissive, for most of their lives. This can be upsetting, as it seems like your dog is turning all Jekyll and Hyde on you.
First of all, dont worry or think that
you need to be
afraid of your friend. You should be able to narrow down the cause when you think
about the situation you were in when the aggression manifested itself. If the dog reacted
badly to a younger dog or even a puppy, chances are your dog is acting out of new sense of a challenge to their pack status. Even if you never had problems of this kind before, a young and over-energetic dog can pose a challenge to an older dog that can no longer keep up, even if the only thing on the young dogs agenda is play.
Older dogs in particular may enjoy puppies, but because of their increased age and decreased endurance, they will only tolerate them for a time. After a self-determined grace period, they will let the puppy know theyve had enough in a firm and forceful way. In most cases, this message is sent with a snap that is all bark and no bite.
In addition, one of the most common hidden causes of aggression in older dogs is the onset of arthritis, which makes them not only less able to engage with other dogs, but also potentially vulnerable and defensive as a result. Stiffness in the morning, a reluctance to jump up into cars or their favorite chair, and general lethargy are all early signs of joint pain. Arthritis in dogs is unfortunately very common, a result of genetic factors, diet, or even over-exercise. If arthritis is causing a dog pain, then they can lash out not only at other dogs, but also at you.
See your vet if arthritis is a possibility, as there are plenty of steps you can take to address the problem, from
dietary supplements to massage and acupuncture, and a revamped exercise regimen. Anti-inflammatory drugs are
effective but best left as a last option (they cost a good bit and they can be rough on the dogs stomach).
Other medical reasons can cause aggression in older dogs, such as thyroid gland problems and possible brain tumors. These are rare cases, but they do happen. Dogs live and learn by routine and tend to act in character. Therefore, in general any sudden and sustained behavioral change to your dog should be investigated.

8 Simple Visual Indicators Your Dog Is Fat
Your
dog is fat. OK, possibly not.
But there's
a very good chance he
or she is, and
you don't even
know it.
Statistics vary, but veterinarians report that
as many as 25
- 44% of all dogs are overweight, and that obesity
is the number-one canine health disorder. Obesity is defined as weighing over 15% more than the standard accepted weight for the dog's height.
With nearly half of our dogs weighing in on the heavy side, it's no surprise, then, that obesity-related
conditions are on the rise within the pet population. These conditions include diabetes mellitus and orthopedic, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, respiratory, immune and reproductive disorders. These can be devastating conditions for your dog
to live with.
Doctors ascribe the rise in obesity to a combination of the general lack of fussiness of dogs, their natural gorging behavior, and insufficient exercise.
And since dogs don't do their own grocery shopping or prepare their own
meals, we must add to this a prevailing ignorance among their owners in providing a nutritious, well-balanced, calorie-controlled diet.
Do
you know if your dog is
fat or fit? Do you know her daily caloric requirements? Do you know what factors may mitigate those daily caloric requirements?
Did you know regular dog
food is packed
with sugar and fat to make the toxic crap they put in it palatable?
A healthy dog is ready to eat at any time. Some dogs quite literally can eat while flat on their side and more or less asleep. Therefore, it is pointless to use your dog's begging behavior as any indicator of how much to feed him.
Knowing how many calories he needs and how that translates into food will help keep him trim and healthy. Energy needs for the dog change throughout
his life, increasing the more active he becomes, and, as you might surmise, decreasing as the dog reaches his senior years.
Your vet will help you determine if your dog's weight is on target, or if she is headed for fat city, and all diet-related considerations should definitely be discussed with your vet before introducing any major changes into your dog's
nutritional sphere. But, before your next office visit, you can do an assessment to determine (albeit imprecisely) your dog's general body condition and weight.
Can the ribs be easily felt with slight fat cover, or are they difficult to feel under moderate or thick fat cover?
From the side view, do you see an abdominal tuck?
Is there thickening at the tail base?
From the overhead view, is there a well-proportioned waist?
Or, from the overhead view, does she have a marked hourglass shape? (an indicator of being underweight)
Or, from the overhead view, is the back slightly or markedly broadened at the
waist? (indicators of being moderately to severely overweight)
Is your dog slow to rise or move around?
Is she reluctant to exercise, or does she tire easily with activity?
Individual metabolism, exercise, age, environment and overall health will determine what your dog really needs to remain lean and healthy.
Since your dog can only have so many calories
every day, it is important to pack lots of nutrition, bulk and appeal into those calories.
Our wildly popular Dog
Food SECRETS
information products can help you step-by-step overcome your nutritional naivete.
Embracing this information doesn't mean you have to prepare every meal with a set of scales on the counter, no. Do it a few times and you can do it forever.
After you determine your dog's caloric needs, the ideal solution to meet those needs is to prepare your dog's food at home, where you can have total control over the caloric and nutritional content.
Our books can help you there, too -- as it includes a collection of easy, healthful, natural and delicious recipes created with your dog's palate and welfare in mind. In fact the Silver and Gold packages include over 200 easy-to-make healthy recipes.

Teacup/Imperial Shih Tzu
I did not create the "labels" Imperial or "Teacup."
These words were already set in stone before
I ever came on board. I picked up the terms only because potential customers were asking me
for "Imperial Size" or "Teacup Size." I RARELY get a request for a "Standard" size
shih tzu as defined by the American Kennel Club. Since
these words
of Imperial Shih
Tzu and Teacup Shih Tzu were so common
to describe a particular size
of shih tzu and I was seeing these
are the terms
people place in search engines boxes looking for the size THEY WANT in a shih tzu, I began using the terms as well mainly to
be able to communicate with potential customers in
their own language.
The smaller size shih tzu are NOT smaller just because they are UNHEALTHY. This is a downright myth or lie being spread by those who are in favor of only one size shih tzu, which they say, is the only size shih tzu
that should be on the market. And the ill-will I
have heard from
this group of people against these little guys is almost unreal, as if these smaller size shih tzus should not have the same rights as the "standard" size, maybe not even the "right to live" if this side of the poll had its ultimate way about things. And......as if people who have these little guys for sale command a higher price, that this is proof the breeder is doing something outrageously WRONG. Well........like I said.......RARELY does anyone ask me for a "standard" size shih tzu. There is a huge market of individuals and families who prefer these smaller sizes including me. I
like all the sizes, but the smaller ones are my favorite.
They are like little tiny treasures, almost always sweeter than the bigger guys. To me, they are like a rare exquisite jewel in the midst of all kinds of other jewels. They do require more work on the part of the breeder. Often, to keep them going at first because they are so small they have to be hand-fed and fed extra supplements like Nutri-cal daily. For these reasons of being that tiny treasured, exquisite jewel, rare and unique from all the rest, and because of the all extra labor involved in raising them, they command a higher price.
And.......I still say, from all I have read.......the smaller size shih tzu.......most likely the under 6 pounds, the 7 and 8 pounders were the very first shih tzu to ever be brought into this world by the Chinese Emporess Dowager in the Imperial Palace of China. The bigger sizes were rejected by these early day breedings conducted in the Palace. They were often sold to the peasants in the streets. The smaller ones were kept under careful guard, were the ones actually very much pampered that slept on satin pillows in the palace, that were owned by the elite and wealthy of that period of time, were given as gifts to the diplomats that visited the Imperial Palace as the most ultimate gift of all to ever receive from the
Princess. They were the shih tzu that was highly reverened and cherished. These little under the table dogs were sometimes so small the Chinese could carry them in their sleeves. Try getting a 9 to 16 lb. dog in your sleeve? Won't work no matter
how big that sleeve is. We owe all our bloodlines to these early breeders. The Princess was mean and ruthless and was known to have little regard for anyone else but her shih tzu. She was burned out several times and eventually I suppose when all the chips were down,
she felt beaten, and was found to have committed suicide with all her little shih tzu around her. So the legends of the shih tzu are steeped in mysterious myths and stories that it is no wonder there is still so much controversy about them and......it is about these little guys the most it seems. They seem to be the most mysterious of all - another reason why they command a higher price tag. They are EXQUISITE LITTLE CREATURES.
They actually do belong recognized in a class all their own. I hope to see The American Kennel Club someday do just that. New breeds are being created everyday. I don't know why this group of people against the little guys try to make such a fuss over them not being appropriate to be anything but a PET and they imply any breeder having them are doing something outrageously wrong to the breed. I wonder do people carry on the same about Teacup Poodles? These little under 6 pounders would be so cute in the showring and in fact, I have a picture of one who was 6 pounds who won a championship (one of my shih tzu books). They belong in a class all their own. Name them Imperials. Name them Teacups. Do away with the Teacup name. Don't matter to me on that.
At first very few people got hold of these little guys. Why? Because they were one of a kind - like a very precious jewel in the midst of all kinds of other jewels.
I also think that because so many other people were able to get hold of the bigger sizes in those days is where these bigger sizes now came from. They went out all over to other countries - but not the tiny treasures of the Imperial Palace. They were the secret of that period of time. They are still fairly rare, fairly scarce. Anything that can be produced in vast numbers is always "cheaper." I remember when VCR's and Microwaves first came out, they were so expensive I thought I could never own one. But then......they started being manufactured by the millions, which brought the prices down, and many other people could afford them.
Right now, these little guys are still fairly scarce, which makes their value go up also. And they are many times just as healthy as the bigger guys.
I wonder don't these people who are against the little guys know that even humans come in all sizes and shapes......what if suddenly there was some kind of a stamp put on humans and if every person was not the weight of 170 pounds and 6 foot tall, they were deemed INAPPROPRIATE to be alive.......There are big people and little people and I am so grateful because I am one of the little people standing about 5 feet 2 inches tall. My weight has gone up through the years, so I might qualify as a person based on weight.......
I cherish the smaller sizes. All of mine have been extra joy to have around!!!! I don't in-breed them or have some kind of special formula to create them. Size is created by genes of the bloodlines. And yes, you could call the smallest in the crew a runt just the same. Personally though, I like the word "teacup" better. I think it more closely describes them and is a cuter term. If I were breeding Police
Dogs, or Alaskan Working Dogs, I would call the smallest one in the crew, the runt. But I choose to call the smallest shih tzu - teacups and imperials. In my mind, that simply means a certain size. Rather than saying, I want a dog 6 pounds or under. A person can say I want a Teacup, and I know the size they are asking me for.

Dogs Nature
Dog Training - A Dog's Nature
Dogs are surprisingly complex creatures.
Some official estimates of
the number of breeds reaches
as high as 800
in Western countries alone. Even given that distinguishing one breed
from another
can be carried to absurd extremes,
the variety is astonishing from a human perspective, who have, perhaps, a dozen 'breeds'.
Complicating the picture still further is the well-known fact that dogs have descended from wolves
but began domestic interaction with humans over 10,000 years ago. As a consequence, there are behaviours that develop regardless of circumstances
and some that are as unique as the human the
dog is paired with. Still, some
common traits stand out.
Dogs are predators.
That doesn't mean
they necessarily hunt and attack every passing cat or rat, but the capacity is
always in them. With acute hearing and head muscles that allow precise orientation of their ears, dogs
can pick up a range of sounds and locate the source quickly and with high accuracy.
A dog's field of vision is higher than that of humans. Their field of view has been estimated from 180-270 degrees, by comparison to a human's 100-150 degrees, allowing them to track events better.
And, of course, there's that famous sense of smell. Citing
figures such as having 25 times as many scent-receptor cells or being able to sense concentrations
100 million times smaller than humans conveys the fact one way.
Another is to report behaviour. Golden Retrievers,
for example, can smell gophers through two feet of packed snow and a foot of frozen earth. And, they'll dig through it to get to the gopher. That's predatory behaviour.
Dogs are social animals.
That's common knowledge, of course. But, though known, it's often ignored. Individuals will often lock a lone dog away in a garage or pen, or on a rope in the yard for long periods. This isolation from contact with humans and other animals invariably leads to fear and/or
aggression and other forms of maladjustment.
Dogs need companionship in order to develop healthy behaviour.
Isolating a dog for brief periods can be a useful training technique. Fear of expulsion from the pack can incense overly assertive, alpha-status seeking dogs into alignment with the trainer's goals. In any human-dog pair, the human must be the
alpha (leader). The alternative is property destruction, human frustration and unsafe conditions for people and dogs.
But excessive time devoid of social interaction with another dog, the human, or even a friendly cat harms the dog's psychology and leads to unwanted behaviour. Even guard dogs have to be able to distinguish between external 'threats' and members of its own 'pack'.
Dogs are exploratory.
Like the two-year-old humans at roughly their same mental level, dogs learn by exploring their environment. And like those humans, they can engage in destructive behaviour. Dogs are no respecters of property. Training and an appropriately selected set of objects and suitable area can channel that behaviour into something acceptable to humans and healthy for the dog.
Providing toys with characteristics
very distinct from human property, such as rawhide bones rather than rubber balls that are hard to tell from children's, leads to less confusion and misbehaviour. In many cases, however, the problem is solved by scent. The dog's toys may look like the child's, but smell very different.
Some amount of digging may be inevitable as part of the dog's exploration. Be prepared to patch holes in lawn if the dog is unsupervised for very long. Plants can usually be protected with cayenne pepper paste, bitter apple and other preparations.
Dogs are scavengers
Dogs will eat deer droppings, even when they have perfectly sound and
ample diets. They'll chew on dead rats, eat grass and ingest a wide variety of things that their own experience shows causes upset stomachs. And they'll repeat the behaviour day after day.
Acknowledging their limited ability to connect cause and effect when those are separated in time is a must in order to keep them healthy and safe.
Recognizing a dog's nature, and working within in it rather than against it leads to less frustration for both human and dog. Enjoying the beneficial aspects, such as spontaneous dog hugs (leaning into a leg), paw offering and a head
laid on the lap are just a few of the rewards.

Journalist Persecuted For Documenting Bush Family Connections to Nazi Regime
The connection between
the Bush
family and the Nazi regime just so happens
to be well-documented
in the National Archives
and the U.S. Congressional Record.
And this
treasonous connection, one
that should
have been dealt with
a long
time ago,
was finally brought to light
in 2003
by investigative reporter, John Buchanan,
in an article first appearing in the New Hampshire Gazette.
Finally, after 60 years of treasonous silence
by politicians and the media, the truth
about how the Bush family came forward and how they were nothing more than two-bit traitors and war profiteers.
But instead of praise,
Buchanan was shunned and then discredited by the mainstream media, his story ridiculed and then placed in the black hole of conspiracy propaganda read by extremists on the internet.
Instead of the treasonous information ending the Bush family reign of terror, it demonstrated just how treasonous, diabolical and devious the government and media had become.
Instead of using this information to once and for corral the Bush family and
its murderous past, the Nazi-like stranglehold on America surfaced instead, rearing
its ugly head as Daddy Bush called out the
attack dogs to once and for all silence Buchanan.
"I found out the hard
way how the Bush family tries to silence people trying to tell the truth, especially when
you cross the line," said Buchanan Thursday while appearing on Greg Szymanski's radio show, The Investigative Journal. "I was so na?ve. I never thought what happened to
me could happen in America, especially for
a person like me who believes in freedom of speech. But I found out quickly freedom of speech doesn't
exist in America when you
begin uncovering the truth about the Bush family."
What Buchanan meant by "finding out the hard way" was that the Bush attack dogs, like true Nazis, on
two separate occasions hauled him
into custody, accusing him of plotting to kill the President,
accusations that were of course unfounded but used as a scare tactic.
"I have to admit I was frightened to death because I thought at any time for no
reason they could haul me away," said Buchanan, adding that his story led to him running for President of the United States in 2004, leading to more than respectable showing in the New Hampshire primaries.
"When I flew into
Washington D.C. to give a speech at the press club after the New Hampshire primaries, turned out to be the first time I was apprehended by agents and held
against my will for two hours," recalled Buchanan, adding that after he was released and gave his
speech, he decided to take a train home to Florida instead of flying.
"I have to admit I was worried about what was going to happen when I returned home to the state controlled by Jeb, the brother of the President."
And Buchanan's worries quickly turned into a nightmare of serious legal proportions, being arrested on a bogus14-count felony complaint for aggravated stalking against a victim the state failed to produce.
A story appearing on August 14, 2004 had this to say about the Buchanan arrest:
Has Campaigning Against Bush Now Become 'Stalking'
"On February 4, while on his way to speak at an evening meeting of the National Press Club, John was kidnapped by unidentified
federal agents who claimed to be Secret Service officers but apparently were not.
"Four days later, upon his return home, John was arrested
again. This time, on phony criminal charges contained in a 14-count felony complaint for aggravated stalking against a victim the state
has failed to produce.
"One is left to conclude that the victim is one George W. Bush. If so, that means that Buchanans Constitutionally protected right to politically challenge a fellow Republican has been deemed stalking."
source:
http://www.envirosagainstwar.org/know/read.php?itemid=1749Two years after the arrest, Buchanan had this to say on his radio interview:
"I remember going to court and the public defender saying he lost my file, I had no defense and I better plead guilty as I was going to jail," recalled Buchanan, adding that he broke down in tears. "I then called a 9/11 activist, Gabriel Day, who quickly
helped me retain a lawyer. The lawyer then obtained a continuance and was able to persuade the judge the government had concocted the story, having no victim or evidence. The case was finally dropped but after considerable time and expense.
"Even after that experience, I was harassed by agents one more time, again accusing me of plotting to kill the President but releasing me after they said I was only in their custody for wanting to impeach the President. What a joke, I remember
telling them before being released, saying if you hauled in everybody who wanted to impeach the President you would have to build another Guatanamo Bay right here in the states.
"Since then, I have lived in five
states in the last year and half, now settling in a rural part of Georgia. I have
written a screenplay about war profiteering, my book Fixing America has been selling and I am planning again to run for President.
"What happened to me should prove to Americans without question that we are living in a fascist
country and that Nazi-like tactics are being used against Americans."
This story, written by Buchanan in 2003, appeared in the New Hampshire Gazette, a story still ignored by all the treasonous politicians and members of the media, as America still remains captive by the murderous and Nazi-like ways of the treasonous Bush family.
