Things To Consider When Dealing With An Injured Parrot
You
dont have to
be a veterinarian to
be able to
take care
of an injured bird on
your own. Of course, anything major
is beyond
your control but
you can do some first aid before hand. It
can save
the birds life.
1. Heat
Temperature
is important with
parrots. At least
85 degrees are needed to keep these
birds warm. If they are warm
enough, they will use
their metabolic energy
and their resources to keep their body
temperature to at least 104 degrees.
This
is the reason
why, you need to
increase the temperature if you have a sick bird in your hand.
You will be able to save a lot of their energy when the temperature
is close to what their body needs.
This will allow
them to conserve most of their energy to fighting the illness.
2. Humidity
Humidity
is vital when you are dealing with an illness
that is
caused by a respiratory
problem. If it is just a wound or a physical energy,
humidity is
not that essential. This is because humidity allows the parrot to breathe easily
as it eases the passage of air. Respiratory problems in
parrots are often seen through the odd noises that they make when they breathe.
Their breathing will be wheezy and raspy. There will be significant movement in the tail when they have problems in breathing.
Another sign is when they hold their beaks open to breathing. If you have it in your house, use a vaporizer or a humidifier to help keep the humidity stable. If you dont have this, you
can improvise and take the parrot inside a bathroom. Turn the hot water faucet on. This will help keep the room humid.
3. Water or liquids
Like humans, parrots need water or liquid to keep them going. High temperature such as fever and problems in the body can drain the body of its fluids. To give water to parrots, you can use a spoon or syringe. Your finger can even be used. Do not use just water. Grape or apple juice are good choices. So is a
bottled water with honey on it.
4. Taking it
easy and rest
Rest is what everybody
needs to help the parrot regain its strength back. An injured or
ill parrot may be placed in a dark room
where he cannot do much of anything but
sleep and rest. Noise will jar them awake while the lure of toys and colorful and shiny stuff will only tempt them to move around.

Beagle - The Facts Every Owner Of This Dog Breed Should Know
Made famous by
the Peanuts character, Snoopy,
Beagles were bred in England
as trail hounds, used to hunt rabbits
and hares. Beagles are scent
hounds and have
a tendency to ignore everything but
the interesting scent when hunting. A very energetic breed
of dog, Beagles are social, curious, intelligent and brave. They are also likely to get into
trouble as their hound dog
instinct can
take over in an instant
should a Beagle catch a whiff
of an exciting or interesting scent.
Male Beagles
will grow to an average height of 14 to 16 inches and average weight of 22 to 25
pounds; females, 13 to 15 inches and 20 to 23 pounds. On average, a Beagle
will live 12 to 15 years. Most Beagles have a
tri-color coat, consisting of red and white, orange and white or lemon and white. It
is a short to medium length coat
that requires no more than minimal care regular brushing and bathing
only when necessary.
Beagles will shed, but
not excessively. They have long,
wide ears and brown or hazel eyes that
often times look
like pleading 'puppy dog' eyes. They have a distinct, and often
times, familiar baying sound that they make when
hunting prey. It is this distinctive howl and ability to pick up
on strange scents that make them excellent guard dogs.
Beagles are good with
families and children and love to play, but care should be taken with other family pets. If a Beagle is
not properly socialized early,
it may try to hunt and capture
the other pets; however, they do not like being left alone and may bay excessively (annoying the neighbors). Beagles do well traveling and adapt quickly and easily to new experiences, thanks to their fearless nature, but also need strong and consistent training to ensure they do not run off. Beagles will do well in almost any living environment, provided they are given plenty of opportunity to run and exercise.
A leash is a must with a Beagle, or a well fenced in yard
as well
as consistent obedience training. Their hunting instinct will take over when a scent comes their way and will run off in search of the prey. Ears should be checked and
cleaned regularly, as Beagles are prone to painful ear
infections. Beagles are also prone to heart disease, epilepsy, eye and back problems, and
chondroplasia - dwarfism that results in warped front legs.
There is a website that
has great information on Beagles and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health,
grooming, living conditions,
best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

The Vets Examination What You Should Know Before Visiting Your Veterinarian
Nobody likes surprises, so it's always nice to
know what to expect when you take
your pet to
the veterinarian. A good physical exam
usually begins by weighing
and recording so that
a continuing
record can
be formed. An increase
or decrease
in weight can indicate a problem. Next, the temperature
is taken, usually rectally with a normal temperature of 101 to 102.5 degrees
for both dogs
and cats.
Coat
and skin are examined next
as poor hair coat
or skin can indicate a poor diet or dermatological infection. Coat should be shiny, not brittle
and coarse, and the skin, clean and not greasy.
While handling your pet, the bones, muscles, and joints, nails, feet, and
lymph nodes are
checked for
any abnormalities.
The chest, heart, and lungs are examined with a
stethoscope, along with the rate and nature of respiration.
At the head, both ears are examined deep into the ear canal for infections. The visible eye structure and lids are examined and the interior of the eye is checked for cataract formation, and an examination of the mouth and throat for infected gums, loose teeth, tartar buildup on the teeth and any damage or swelling in the throat.
Lastly, at the
rear, the
anus, anal glands, prepuce/penis or vcalva are checked for any abnormalities, and the anal glands cleaned if
they are
compacted. During the examination the vet will usually ask the
name of your pet's food and any other treats or vitamin supplements, along with any medication you
may have given your pet.
A fecal sample will be taken for examination to
check for
intestinal parasites, such
as hookworm and roundworm, and a blood
test may be recommended if heartworm is
suspected. No checkup would be complete without a flea and tick
prevention/treatment with a
choice as to who will administer the
treatment, you or the vet. As you can
see,the vets examination is
one of the most important
things you can
do for your pet. Whatever you do, do not ever
skimp out on your pets care. While the exam may sound involved and complicated, the entire process usually
only takes about 30 minutes and guarantees your pet a healthier happier life.
